 DESCRIPTION: 

 

Punta Arenas is the capital of Chilean Patagonia and the starting point of numerous expeditions to the Antarctic continent. Founded in 1848 at the southern tip of the American continent, Punta Arenas was initially a penal colony and then became an important pole of inmigration for Europeans and people from Chiloé. 

 

this tour, we will visit Cerro de la Cruz viewpoint, to enjoy the colorful sights of the city, the Strait of Magellan and Tierra del Fuego Island. Later, we will visit the Muñoz Gamero Main Square , the heart of Punta Arenas since the end of the 19th century, which has great activity and handicraft stalls where it is possible to acquire local souvenirs, as well as appreciate the monument to Hernando de Magallanes and the neoclassical buildings from the magnates of livestock from the past century.

 

The tour continues at the Maggiorino Borgatello Salesian Museum, one of the oldest museums in Chile, whose permanent exhibition offers collections of local flora and fauna, colonial artifacts, ethnography, Antarctica, cartography, industry, and pieces from the Salesian missions of the Dawson Island and Río Grande.

 

Before returning to the hotel, the tour also allows you to get to know the northern sector of the city and its monuments, such as “The Sheepherder”, the one dedicated to the Croatian immigrant and the Oil Statue.

 

 Later we visit its main streets and avenues to appreciate the traditional Memorial Shepherd, the mansions of the suburbs and the Costanera Avenue, until the Regional Cemetery, where We will travel the streets of beautiful gardens and luxurious mausoleums.

 

Traveling to the South of the Brunswick Peninsula and arriving at the Strait of Magellan Park, is to take a trip through the natural and human history of the Strait of Magellan. The route skirts the mythical Strait, where it is possible to appreciate large numbers of sea birds as oystercatchers, wild geese, several species of ducks, cormorants, and on a lucky day, perhaps, dolphins and sea lions. The Park is located 60 kilometers south of the city of Punta Arenas and is currently newly renovated. Here, you´ll find attractions such as: 

 

Visitors Center 

 

This is the entrance door to know the Strait. The Center hosts an interpretive exhibition about the natural and human history of the Strait of Magellan. Also, you can enjoy the panoramic view of Puerto del Hambre from its terrace.

 

Fort Bulnes (National Historic Landmark) 

 

Historical reconstruction of the fort founded in 1843, when the young Republic of Chile took possession of the Strait. The Fort today remembers the origin of Punta Arenas and is also a traditional Sunday getaway for the Magellan community.

 

Viewpoint of the Strait

 

An easy walk of about 20 minutes through the Wind Forest leads to the main viewpoint of the Park, from where you can observe towards north and south of the Strait. 

Path of the Coast

 

A tour through the landscape, flora and fauna of the Strait of Magellan among the viewpoints of San Juan, Sarmiento, Parque del Estrecho, Tierra del Fuego and Brunswick.
